HEALTHY EATING VISIT FROM THE TESCO COMMUNITY CHAMPION
Campbell Keatings from Tesco very kindly visited us in school on Friday 08 April 2022. Campbell spoke to the children about sustainability, recycling and fair trade while bravely taking on questions on a host of different types of fruit. Campbell very kindly left us with samples of fruit which we shared out between our classes; we will look forward to seeing him again during summer term. While he was with us, Campbell presented our golden raffle winners with their prizes and also got to see items purchased with a recent Tesco Community Grant. #Everylittlehelps #CommunityChampion
children's mental health week- february 2022
Growing Together- Celebrating Children’s Mental Week at the beach.
health education week:
monday 17 january 2022 - friday 21 january 2022
Reception & Primary 1
As part of ‘Health Week’ in School, we went on a ‘Winter’ walk and counted the steps that we took. We were looking out for ‘Signs of Winter’ and comparing it to our ‘Autumn walk’. We were able to see lots of frost sparkling in the sunlight and the board walks were too slippery to walk on because of the frost! The sun was much lower in the sky than autumn time and there were no flowers left in the flower bed across the road from school. We walked 1900 steps today.
On Day 2, we were able to walk 2900 steps along the beach! This is approximately one and a half miles. We found a crab on our walk as well. Before we go on our walk, we try to estimate how many steps we are going to take.
We have lots of little tired legs at the end of a week of daily exercising for our Health week. Each day we went on a slightly different walk, exploring different areas of the beach. One day we even brought our snack out with us to eat. In total we have walked 12 810 steps over the week which we think is just over six miles in total. We have enjoyed looking out for signs of Winter on our walks and observing the tide and beach to see where it was each day.

Primary 4 & Primary 5
Children in P4 and P5 have been learning about the importance of a healthy heart and how it works. As part of their P.E lesson, children regularly took their heart rates and will be using the data collected to produce charts and draw some conclusions from.
On day two, children have been researching the heart in further detail and thinking about how it should be kept healthy as a vital muscle. Working in pairs, children created their own posters.
To conclude the week, children used data collected from earlier in the week to produce fantastic line graphs that show how heart rates were affected by exercise during our P.E session on Monday.

Primary 6 & Primary 7
Children in P6 and P7 have been learning about how tobacco products and alcohol affect the body. Children researched the impact on the lungs, the heart and liver. During the week, pupils created posters and wrote an informed argument which drew a conclusion based on their research. On Friday 21 January they presented their findings to peers in a socially distanced assembly.
world mental health day 2021
This year, World Mental Health Day falls on Sunday 10 October 2021. Today is World Mental Health Day. This week, classes have been reflecting on the importance of positivity; we continue to work with our children to help them create a positive self-image and recognise all the wonderful gifts and attributes they have.
Reception and P1 class have themed their lessons around this lovely motto: ‘In a world where you can be anything, be kind’. We each had a challenge to choose something kind we were going to do this week. We have also been learning about how special and unique each one of us is, by designing and making our hand puppets and reading ‘You are special’ by Max Lucado.
P2 and P3 pupils have focused on positive thinking, considering all the things that they 'can do...' well. Children have also taken part in a yoga session, focusing on gentle stretching and managing their breathing. Children showed some of these stretches to Mrs Harbinson's class on Friday.
P4 and P5 pupils have been thinking about their 'character strengths' as part of their myHappymind learning. Children created posters and then presented these to friends in Mr Irwin's class, discussing the symbolism of their poster and why they selected these qualities.
P6 and P7 pupils shared their learning on 'Positive thinking' with children sharing self-made fortune tellers which focused on positive self image. Children also shared inspirational thoughts on self-image from the likes of Henry Ford.
As part of our curriculum, we continue to take advantage of our wonderful seaside setting and learning outdoors when we can.

myhappymind
During Summer Term in the previous academic year, we used Health & Wellbeing funding from the Department of Education to introduce a program to all year groups at school called myHappymind. This program will continue during the 2021-2022 academic year.
myHappymind is all based around helping children to understand how their brain works and to support them in developing positive skills and habits to be their very best selves! myHappymind is delivered in schools by class teachers through a series of interactive lessons and then the children apply these learnings throughout the
day.
To further embed this learning and ensure that you are able to engage in these topics with your child, myHappymind has developed a set of resources for parents. These resources can be accessed online on your computer, or through an app on your phone. The resources allow children to continue to practise some of the habits they have developed at school, such as happy breathing, for you to learn more about what they are learning in the program. Also included are activities for you to do together at home, to complement the in-school lessons. To access these materials parents can go to https://myhappymind.org/parent-resources-ni (or by clicking on the link below) and you’ll be guided through the process. We really encourage you to make use of this free content so that you can support your child in getting the best out of the curriculum.
If parents have any questions about the curriculum, please contact your class teacher. If you have any technical questions about accessing the resources, please contact [email protected]

world mental health day- 10 october 2020
We work with our children to help them develop a positive self image, high self esteem and to learn how to cope when things aren't going as they hoped or planned. Knowing how to manage your own thoughts, feelings and where, when and how to get help is very important. This has never been more important than it is now after lockdown and the continued difficult circumstances faced by people globally. This year, World Mental Health Day falls on Saturday 10 October 2020. In the run up to this day, classes have been thinking about how to cope and how to feel good about themselves.
Reception and P1 class have enjoyed an 'It's My Day' activity, receiving compliments from their friends about all their nice qualities.
P2 and P3 pupils have taken part in a yoga session in our assembly hall, focusing on gentle stretching and managing their breathing.
P4 and P5 pupils have been thinking about all the things that make life worth living- all the things and people that bring joy to their lives.
P6 and P7 pupils, as part of their PDMU lessons, have thinking about their thoughts, self help, how they can be kind to others and what makes life great.
As part of our curriculum, we've been taking advantage of our wonderful seaside setting and learning outdoors when we can.
