a message from our road safety team
psni road safety visit
We were delighted to be visited by Chris from the PSNI Peninsula Neighbourhood Team on Thursday 7th April 2022. Our Road Safety Team wrote to the PSNI team before Christmas to arrange a visit and we are very grateful that Constable Brown was able to spend some time with the children.
A number of issues around Road Safety and Online Safety were discussed. Chris has asked if families can park their cars in the fantastic Cloughey Beach Car Park and make the short 2 minute walk to school- particularly during the warmer weather. Concerns have been highlighted regarding children entering and exiting vehicles against oncoming traffic on Main Road. School wishes to join the PSNI in appealing to families to use the fantastic parking facilities at Cloughey Beach to ensure safety and lines of sight for all road users and pedestrians.
Chris also spoke to children about some of the relevant dangers of making content available to other online users through social media and popular apps. We strongly encourage children and families to ensure they are checking privacy settings on relevant apps and considering carefully if particular apps are age appropriate for children. A number of excellent guides are available to parents through our website:

letter of invite to the psni- 06 october 2021
Our Road Safety Team met today and wrote to the PSNI, inviting them to join us to measure the speed of traffic passing by school. #TeamKirkistown #roadsafety #watchthisspace
safe routes to schools: programming our flashing lights- 23 june 2021
Our Road Safety Team met to discuss the different times of day we would like the road signs to flash, indicating to passing drivers that school is in attendance. Children got to see the request form (an Excel spreadsheet) that schools complete; they thought it looked rather complicated and realised that covid impacted many other things other than just how we move around school. #TeamKirkistown #RoadSafety
planning meeting- 16 june 2021
Our Road Safety Team met today to make plans for our campaign next year
new 20mph speed limit
We are delighted with the confirmation that a part time speed limit of 20mph will exist outside our school. This will help ensure safe journeys for all our community.
We ask that all our families continue to park responsibly on the school run, keeping the yellow zig-zag lines free at all times and, wherever possible, seek to walk to school.
Community policing have advised that they will be looking into traffic in and around peninsula schools shortly after Easter.

parental road safety advice
At seven years old, your child might still hold your hand as you walk them to school - a few years later your child may be going to school without you. It's important to know ways your child can be independent while staying safe on the roads.
Knowing the Green Cross Code
Children should not go out alone until they are old enough to know the Green Cross Code and use it properly. The age is different for all children but it is generally not before they are eight years old.
To follow the code, they must:

Walking is healthier than going by car. But your child can't always see what you can see and drivers can't always see your child, where they can see you. You could teach your child to:

Knowing the Green Cross Code
Children should not go out alone until they are old enough to know the Green Cross Code and use it properly. The age is different for all children but it is generally not before they are eight years old.
To follow the code, they must:
- find a safe place to cross
- stand on the pavement near the kerb
- look all round for traffic and listen
- if traffic is coming - let it pass then look all round again
- when there is no traffic near, walk straight across the road
- keep looking and listening for traffic while crossing
When walking along the road
Walking is healthier than going by car. But your child can't always see what you can see and drivers can't always see your child, where they can see you. You could teach your child to:
- always walk on the pavement or path if there is one - never stray on to the road
- walk as far away from the kerb as possible
- walk in single file on the right side of the road facing the traffic if there's no pavement
When you are out and about
Always be sure to:
- explain road safety rules
- use the Green Cross Code
- talk about what's going on in the street
- encourage your child to talk about what they see on the roads and whether it's safe or not
- let your child make decisions with you, so that they learn through activity
- help your child plan the safest route whenever they are going somewhere
