cloughey cross country cup & kirkistown xc championships 2022
Well, credit where credit is due- the weather forecast was exactly right. After the non-stop rain the day before, we were delighted to be greeted by the beautiful sunshine for our annual school cross country championships. We were thrilled to have our Shared Education friends from St Patrick’s, Ballygalget, join us as children tested themselves over the course at Calhame Pitch.
Primary 3 & 4 children set off for a two lap journey, covering a distance of approximately half a mile or 800m. After a typically frantically fast start, children settled in well to their races and all looked very proud of themselves for completing the course.
Key Stage 2 children (Primary 5, 6 & 7) faced an extra lap of 400m to bring their race distance of 1200metres. Both the girls and the boys did themselves proud with many managing a smile as they crossed the finish line to the applause of the spectators.
We were delighted to be able to invite parents along this year to watch and offer our thanks to those who were available to lend their support. As ever, the children from both schools were superb sports, clapping and cheering each other on to complete the course. A special thanks goes to Mr Harris who helped to assemble and disassemble the course.

kirkistown xc championships 2021
We were blessed with beautiful summer weather for our re-arranged Inter-House Cross Country Championships at Calhame Pitch on Wednesday 02 June 2021.
The Key Stage 1 race featured children from Primary 3 & 4 over a distance of 800m. The course features a very slight incline on each lap and it’s important the runners pace themselves well to ensure they don’t run out of steam. In an extremely competitive girls’ race, Amy produced a stunning front running display to take the victory from Joanna, Melissa and Emily. In the boys’ race, Kai made the decisive move on the final lap to storm through to victory ahead of George in second, Kristian in third and Cooper in fourth. We have the making of great little cross country team if all the children continue to enjoy their running. All the runners completed the course successfully and will receive a certificate in our Friday assembly with medals for first three boys and girls.
Key Stage 2 runners run 1200m and have to negotiate an extra lap on their way. Pace judgement is therefore essential. In the boys’ race, Zach produced a commanding display to lead from whistle to tape. It was a keenly contested race for silver and bronze with Harry and Evan being challenged late in the race by a very well paced run from Gregg. As it was, the two older boys just managed to hold on as Gregg closed. Lewis finished very strongly in fifth place and must have run a final lap of the race as quick as those in front of him to make up the ground. The Key Stage 2 girls race was led initially by Lydia before Lana opened up a commanding lead on the second lap and came flying into the finish funnel as if she was only just getting started. Lydia finished strongly in 2nd place having to hold off a brave push from Mylee who ran a great place for an excellent third place. Early contenders, Naomi and Ruth, pushed hard to finish to complete the top five with very good performances. All runners will receive their certificates in our Friday assembly with medals again for the first three boys and girls.
With each runner finishing, the points were quickly accumulating for their respective house teams. 2019 winners, Ardkeen, were determined to retain the Cloughey Cross Country Cup and all eyes will now look to the results which will be announced in our Friday assembly. Despite the competitive nature of the event, the single most pleasing aspect of the day was the support that children offered to one another. From the far end of the field, the roar of support followed the runners as they progressed around the field passing each class who offered words of encouragement and clapping. We couldn't be prouder of all our children for their efforts today and their fantastic sportsmanship. The event would not have been possible without the generous support of the parent volunteers who helped to assemble and disassemble the course, with marshalling and with recording the finishing positions. Our thanks are extended to Mr & Mrs Harris and also Mr & Mrs Williams for their generosity with their time.

Stormont xc races- Saturday 08 February 2020
We were delighted to be invited to the annual Stormont Cross Country Races hosted by the Northern Ireland Civil Service Sports Association. Despite the forecast for horrific winds, the weather conditions were dry with a splattering of wintry sunshine. A cool breeze hung in the air, reminding us that Storm Ciara wasn't far off.
The boys' race was off first 1st at 11am with Samuel, Lewis, Yonatan and Gregg (a late addition to the team) on the start line for Kirkistown. The 1km course was undulating and the ground very uneven, littered with fallen branches, twigs and even pot holes. But that's exactly what cross country's all about. The race got off to a frenetic start but our boys settled incredibly well into their own race rhythms. All four boys, supported by parents and the girls, put on a valiant, spirited display and battled well to good placings.
The girls' race followed shortly with an equally fast start. After the first rise, the Kirkistown girls were closely packed together. Lana and Ruth had appeared to take a tumble in the first 100m but quickly regathered their composure to continue and run fine races. Naomi ran very maturely, keeping a good pace throughout to finish strongly. Jessica, new to cross country, showed great determination to complete the course and complete our team.
Well done to all our girls and boys for a magnificent morning's work. Thank you for representing your school so well and making us all very proud of you. Thank you kindly to the families for their support also.

girls' football tournament- November 2019
Congratulations to our wonderful girls football team who were runners up at the Ards Blair Mayne Wellbeing and Leisure Complex Everybody Active Tournament last week (November 2019). The girls played really well as a team, conceding only 3 goals all day. Quite a few Premier League defences could learn a lot from these young ladies. Well done to all our players and thank you to everyone involved for making the event such a success.
football and rounders tournaments- may 2019
We’ve had a number of teams and individuals out and about representing school recently. Our football and rounders teams have been action at Glastry College and at Calhame pitch recently. Miss Taggart reports that the boys and girls have conducted themselves superbly and played well as a team. Well done to all the children involved.
area cross country final- wed 22 may 2019
After an excellent performance at the Ards & North Down Borough Cross Country Final, Samuel was selected to represent the Ards & North Down and Borough in the Area Cross Country Final at Ormeau Park this week. In a high class field, Samuel battled his way through to finish in the fifties- a very creditable performance indeed. Well done, Samuel.
Ards & north down borough council cross country finals 2019
We recently attended the North Down and Ards Cross Country event at Londonderry Park on Wednesday 03 April 2019. Our team of 16 (8 boys and 8 girls) had to cope with cold, blustery conditions and a demanding 1.9km race distance but did so incredibly admirably. Our team were very well supported by friends and family who cheered them on as they battled with the conditions as the weather closed in. A small video package of our girls' team is available below.
