autumn term 2021-2022
Outdoor Play with large construction items
We were very busy during our outdoor learning, working in pairs and small groups. We had a selection of large construction items to build with, such as tyres, planks of wood and crates. We built a selection of walkways and assault courses to travel along, being careful to think about safety and balance as well.
fun on the wall bars at Pe time
All children in Reception and Primary one really enjoyed using the wall bars in school as part of their P.E. lesson!
beach school
We spent more time treasure hunting at the beach with our friends. In pairs we hunted for treasure in our pots, then we spend time looking at them in close detail. We drew what we were able to see on our white boards!
librarian visit
We were so pleased to receive a visit from the librarian at Portaferry library! We listen to stories, sang songs and recited Nursery Rhymes together.
beach school: treasure hunting
We really enjoyed our time at Beach school today. We used our new tarpaulin to sit on and had to think a way of securing it on the sand as it was rather windy! We discovered that one child sitting in each corner initially kept it secure while the rest of the children collected large stones to set around the perimeter to hold it down. We played one of favourite PE games on the beach and then after this we worked in pairs to find ‘treasure’ beach items. When we returned to school, we were able to show and talk about our treasure with the rest of the class. Somebody had found Captain Hook’s ‘Hook’ made out of seaweed, a crab claw was found, many different types of pebbles and we even found the remains of a fish egg nest! We look forward to finding more treasure on our next visit.
Outdoor learning
Reception and Primary 1 children have been enjoying more outdoor learning. Children formed pathways and numbers using wooden blocks, built their own tracks for the scooters and ride-on didcar vehicles and made estimates before timing themselves on their circuit. The role play and creative areas were very busy with children serving lunch and also playing a game of 'sharks in the water!'

We visited the beach on a sunny, cold and very windy day to find out more about the number 8! Each of us had to find eight big stones to bring to our hoop and make a set of eight. Then we had to design a picture, pattern or a sculpture with them. After visit we went for a quick walk on the beach, it was very cold and windy!
observing our gardening areas
We have been looking for signs of growth and change in our various gardening areas. We planted tulip bulbs before Christmas as part of our Intergenerational ‘Food for Life’ project. We were very excited to see that some of them have started to push through and we can even see some of the tulip leaves! Our indoor Hyacinth bulbs have grown very quickly and we have a selection of beautiful blue, pink and white flowers. We have discovered, that each colour smells slightly different!
safer internet day- tuesday 08 february 2022
Children in Reception and Primary 1 have been learning about how to stay safe on the internet with the help of various characters from the story ‘Digiduck and the Magic Castle’. They each made a puppet of one of the three main characters and were able to use them to tell their friends about what they had been learning.
Children were also able to choose a member of their family at home to be the person who ‘helps them stay safe on the internet’. They drew some lovely pictures of these family members and wrote a sentence to label their picture.

We have lots of little tired legs at the end of a week of daily exercising for our Health week. Each day we went on a slightly different walk, exploring different areas of the beach. One day we even brought our snack out with us to eat. In total we have walked 12 810 steps over the week which we think is just over six miles in total. We have enjoyed looking out for signs of Winter on our walks and observing the tide and beach to see where it was each day.

As part of our ‘Measures’ in Maths, we have been thinking about ‘area’. In our outdoor learning, we worked in small groups to find out how many shells were needed to cover the area of a square and how many stones were needed to cover the area of a circle. We soon discovered that with the shells and stones, lots of gaps were being left, so the entire area wasn’t actually being covered. The boys and girls worked out that to cover the rectangle shape of the picnic table, we would need something that would not leave any gaps. They chose to use the small whiteboards to cover the entire area of the table. It took eight whiteboards to cover the area of the picnic table!

We have been making bunny ears to help us to have our very best listening! We are listening to sounds around us and beginning to think about sounds that we can hear at the beginning of some words. We are also completing listening activities. Primary 1 are completing lots of phonological awareness activities to prepare us for learning our phonic sounds.
Outdoor learning at the beach
We had so much fun at the beach today. We played one of our PE games on the beach and we built lots and lots of sandcastles. We were counting the sandcastles and had hoped to count all of the castles at the end, but they kept on getting knocked over. The sun was shining until it was time to go and then the heavens opened!
Show and Tell- boys today
Thank you for showing and telling us all about these super toys, boys! We even had a ‘Show and tell video’ sent to us as well; well done, boys.
Certificate winners in Reception and Primary 1
Well done to these wonderful children for receiving these super certificates!
outdoor learning- making patterns
We have been using lots of different things to make patterns with our friends outside. We have used things like shells from the beach, pebbles, bean bags, quoits and large tyres!
pencil control activities
We are trying very hard to join the dots together to make patterns and shapes with our writing pencils. We have to think carefully about holding our pencil the correct way!
Class library
We are enjoying choosing books from our class library!
certificate winners
P.E Time
We have been playing games in PE. It has been really important to listen to the instructions in each of the games!
Outdoor play
We have lots of fun playing with each other in our Outdoor Play area beside our classroom.
show and tell
We are using our class See Saw app to do our ‘Show and Tell’ this year. We have really enjoyed finding out what some of our friends have been showing us. We have tried hard to ask them questions about their items.
making birthday cakes
Each of us chose a birthday cake to design and colour. Then we had to think about and count how many candles we needed on each of our cakes. Some of us needed four and some of us needed five.
enjoying lunchtime
We were very excited to have our first lunch in school with all of our new friends!
showing our scrapbooks
We have really enjoyed during our Talking and Listening sessions in Literacy finding out what our friends did during their Summer holidays from their scrap books.
celebrating birthdays
Three children in our class had birthdays during the Summer holidays and one child has had a birthday this week!
fun time at ict
We are learning how to control the mouse for the computers. We have been using a Painter program to choose colours and make shapes.
feeding the birds
We filled up our new bird feeder for our Outdoor Play area beside our classroom. We are checking each day to see when the birds start to eat from it. So far we haven’t seen any birds but we hope to see some soon.
table-top activities
We have had lots of fun during Table Top activity time!
task time
Boys and girls had to listen very carefully to instructions in this task time activity. They had to think about which birds had to be coloured red and which ones had to be coloured blue. They also had to think about how to hold their colouring pencils correctly and to stay inside the lines. Lots of careful thinking needed!
handwashing
Reception & Primary 1 pupils have been singing about washing their hands!
curriculum information
As we are unable to host our traditional curriculum meetings for parents, we have prepared an information pack instead. The pack can be downloaded below and should help parents feel informed about how / what their children will be learning this year. Should any questions remain, please telephone the school office (028 42771455) to make an appointment with the class teacher. Please note that appointments must be made and all visitors will be expected to wear a face covering / mask.

Mrs Harbinson and Ms Matthews are really looking forward to welcoming you into school this week. Take care to watch the video below and follow the wall around the outside of the building. Mrs Harbinson and Ms Matthews will be waiting for you in the rear playground to play some fun games to start the day!
If it is raining, the children will be received in the assembly hall after making their way around to the rear playground- look for the open doors.
Please take care not to bump into any adults coming back the same way.
If you think you will have difficulty accessing this route please contact school.

2019 - 2020
spring class assembly
We had our Spring Class Assembly on Friday 13 March 2020. Lots of Mums, Dads and other family members came to watch us talk about and display our learning this term.
bird feeders
Children, as part of their sessions with Peninsula Healthy Living Centre, have been making bird feeders.
dream houses- junk art modelling
Children from Reception, P1 and P2 have been designing and building their dream houses using a range of readily available material. Children have been busy talking about their dream houses and I'm confident that the social media manager from a well known property selling website would have a few fabulous things to say- well done, boys and girls!
pancake making
Reception, P1 and P2 had great fun today making pancakes (and eating them) to celebrate Pancake Day!
DOG SAFETY
We were delighted to be visited by Charlie, the dog, today who popped along to give children safety tips on how to stay safe around other dogs. Charlie's owner, Michelle (Raise the woof) spoke to children about how dogs communicate through body language and how they interpret the body language of others around them.
Children were given a number of helpful tips when around dogs:
1) Always ask the owner if it's okay to pet the dog
2) Stand in front of the dog (never crouch) and let the dog sniff / lick your hand first
3) Stroke the dog gently under the chin
4) Wash your hands afterwards
Michelle also spoke to children about staying safe when they encounter stray dogs by:
1) Stop any game you're playing and stand still
2) Cross your arms over your chest and tuck your head down
Children had the opportunity to put the theory into practice by stroking Charlie if they wished. We all learned a lot through this valuable session and are very grateful to Michelle and Charlie for their time.
Following Charlie's visit, children have been writing, drawing and word processing their recollections from his visit. We've included photographs below.

Planting & Nurturing- Wednesday 04 March 2020
We had our final session at the Peninsula Healthy Living Centre today with children involved in building bird boxes and further planting.
On behalf of our children, on behalf of our staff and behalf of our entire school community, we'd like to thank Sarah and John for their outstanding hospitality and generosity of spirit. Our youngest children in school have really enjoyed being involved in this project and it has really been a talking point around the corridors and in the classroom.
The project would not have been possible without the financial assistance from North Down & Ards Borough Council as part of the #myvoicemyAND project. We are also very grateful for the excellent assistance and support from members of the Cloughey and District Community Association. Today, as every week, we were joined by local people willing to help their local school- your support is very much appreciated.

outdoor play
We love to play outdoors! We use our outdoor adventure play area, build bridges, use our design wall and explore the shapes and space around us.
creative play
Creative play is a big part of our learning. We have the opportunity to improve our gross and fine motor skills while role playing too.
