letters from manchester
What a great joy it was to for our children to receive replies to the letters they wrote to children attending James Brindley Community Primary School in Manchester. As part of their literacy curriculum last year, children wrote about life as a pupil attending Kirkistown Primary School and kept their fingers crossed that they might receive a reply. During our first days back in August, children were delighted to find out they'd received a reply and to share these with their new class friends.
music to our ears
Last week, children were introduced to these fantastic new glockenspiels. We've been looking at the different notes in the musical scales and examining how the pitch is different with each note. As well as using our ears to differentiate the sound, we've been using our eyes too. Children noticed that there were different coloured notes but also how the higher pitch notes have a much shorter steel bar while the lower pitch notes have a much longer steel bar. We compared this to humans, where adults are bigger and have lower voices while children and toddlers are smaller have a much higher pitched voice.
phonics and spelling with nessy
Children in Primary 4 and 5 have made a great start to year, getting themselves re-acquainted with Nessy, rehearsing the pure sounds of letters and looking at vowel and consonant digraphs in words. They are now applying this knowledge to their spellings.

Primary 4 & 5 pupils have been writing informal letters which are now ready to post to children at a school in Greater Manchester! We've included a lovely postcard showing off our wonderful school and are hopeful that in time, we’ll receive letters back.
measuring using different tools and scales
Children in Primary 4 & 5 have been using a variety of tools and scales to measure this week. Today pupils were introduced to stones and pounds, comparing these to kilograms. Children estimated their weight and used benchmarks to hone their estimates as they went along. Children had to set the scale themselves as part of the preparation work. #TeamKirkistown #Realworldmaths
activity based learning
Linking to our topic based on the great outdoors, children have been role playing being at the campsite. As part of their task, children had to make decisions on what items to take to the campsite and had to rank these items in order of importance. Children then completed a follow up activity to improve their fine motor skills, cutting and assembly a paper tent linking it their understanding of 3D shapes.

Primary 5 pupils will work towards achieving the John Muir Award by studying their local area with Primary 4 pupils working towards a separate school award. Children will learn about the water cycle, and coasts more widely. We will be out and about studying plant life, local wildlife and will be looking to survey some visitors to the Warren and Cloughey Beach. We will also undertake a beach clean as part of being good citizens. #outdoorlearning #thegreatoutdoors
spring term 2020-2021
It's fair to say that we've all been thoroughly pleased to be back at school. We've ensured our children have settled back in by taking daily wellbeing walks along the beautiful Boardwalk just 50m from our front door. We've also had the opportunity to express ourselves through artwork and through making a start on the myHappymind programme which all classes are participating in.
autumn term 2020-2021
numberstacks
We've been hard at work making use of our new maths resource- 'Numberstacks' - to help us understand and visualise mental calculation strategies including adding and subtracting by 19, 29 and 99. Children have been using the counters to help model the processes involved when completing these types of calculations mentally.
trailblazers animation session
This week, children have been working on visuals to depict 'Equality'. We had some very nice concepts associated with this idea with children trying really hard to think outside the box.
friendship week (anti-bullying week)
Children have been putting their ICT skills to good use, making posters to advertise the qualities of a good friend. After a whole class discussion, children focused in on the essential qualities of what they deemed to be a good friend. We'll add more posters here as they're completed.
lifecycles
Children have been learning new skills using Powerpoint to create these fantastic and very colourful 'Lifecycle of a Butterfly' posters. It's amazing how intuitive children are around software- within minutes, the children were taking control of their own learning and leading the way. We think you'll agree these finished products look very smart.
cashing in!
We've been very busy using coins to pay for our shopping! We've been buying food, stationery- all sorts! Some of us have even been using number lines to calculate our change- brilliant practice for being young adults.
trailblazers animation session
We've had our fourth Trailblazers session this week with children designing their own image of an equitable world. We discussed democracy and fairness with children sharing their ideas of what would make life 'fair'. Translating these ideas into images was quite a challenge but we've made a great start!
measuring @ home
Children in Primary 4 and Primary 5 have continued their practical application of measure by estimating and measuring items at home. Some of the older children have then been calculating the difference between their actual measurement and their estimation. #mathsinaction
animation session 2 - trailblazers
We have been having a great time widening our experience and refining out animation skills as part of the Trailblazers project. Children have now incorporated backgrounds using a combination of freehand drawings and auto-shape tools. Through manipulation and clever use of copy and paste, children have been created a minimum 12 frame clip to show a bouncing ball moving across the screen. Some children have even been looking at how to show the impact made by the bouncing ball upon the ground. Excellent work, everyone! #USINGICT #Animators
flowering plants
As part of our learning on 'Rainforests and Lifecycles', children have been looking at flowering plants. Today, we looked inside a flowering plant at the carpel and stamen. We dissected and labelled the parts and have been thinking of clever ways to help us remember their names. We are now going to discuss the roles played by each part of the plant.
measuring up
Primary 4 & 5 pupils have started work on measurement this week. Children are working in house teams, choosing the correct measuring tool for the job. They are estimating, using their previous knowledge, and trying really hard to be precise with their own measurements!

outdoor learning- world around us
Children are learning about the 'Rainforest and Lifecycles' this term. We have been looking at where rainforests are located, why they located there and what conditions are like in the rainforest. Having looked at the layers of the rainforest, children took part in a creative outdoor activity on Cloughey Beach, using items washed up by the Irish Sea to create their own miniature models of the rainforest layers. We are so lucky to have this lovely setting on our doorstep and children had a wonderful time working in their house teams.
getting into 'shape'
Children have been making a variety of 2D shapes using paper folding techniques!
narrative writing
Children have been busy planning, writing and typing their original stories for publication in our new school book. Pupils plan their story and write it over several weeks, stopping to analyse their plot lines and character development. The children have spoken very positively of the experience and have been working very hard to share their wonderful ideas with you. We hope to have our new book available in December / January.
p.e - circuit training
Primary 4 & Primary 5 pupils have been working hard in P.E lessons, taking part in circuit training. Working in 60 second bursts, the children raise their heart rate and have a short rest before moving on to the next station. The anaerobic activity is fantastic for improving fitness, improving the efficiency of our lungs and great for self-esteeming. Check out the healthy glow and smiles on these lovely faces...

spring term 2019-2020
Our topic this term is Vikings.
Children will be learning about the Vikings as sailors, raiders, traders, settlers, farmers and crafters. Through careful research (use of published books, the internet, maps, and a museum visit), children will ask questions about and discover who the Vikings were and why they travelled to the United Kingdom and Ireland. They will discuss their relationships with the anglo-saxons / Irish citizens and consider the similarities and differences between their own lives and a typical Viking boy or girl of the same age. Together, children will learn about how the Vikings lived when they came to Britain and Ireland thinking carefully about the evidence base for their discoveries. Primary 5 children will discuss the realities of a Viking battle and, in creative art lessons, design their own shields before taking part in a mock battle. Our main topic will be supplemented with a visit to the North Down Museum on Wednesday 11 March 2020.

Children have been learning about the shape and comparative sizes of the Earth, Sun and Moon. They have researched other planets in the Solar system, discussing why Pluto is no longer considered a planet! As part of a wider look at the known universe children provided voice overs for their very own science video examining the size of the universe we inhabit.
Later in the term, children have been learning about why we have night and day and why it is different times around the globe. As part of this learning we looked at Tromso in Norway which offers a very different experience of night and day from Cloughey! We have also look at the historical view of the Earth over centuries. How the 'Flat Earth' theory with the benefit of improved knowledge and advances in technology gave way to what we know now the shape of our planet to be. Our artwork linked nicely to this topic with children studying the work of Alan bean, the fourth man to walk upon the surface of the moon. Children replicated some of Alan's work before creating their own planets using a mixture of art materials. Our music lessons developed the understanding of rhythm as children learned a song about the sun. The song detailed the different parts of the sun and featured both singing and rapping. Children performed the song at our recent class assembly.

P.E
In P.E lessons this term, children have all learned the British Gymnastics 'Floor Exercise' routine. Alongside fitness sessions, children have taken part in some running and were part of a brilliant netball taster delivered by Betty Wilson on behalf of Everybody Active.

Literacy
Our literacy lessons have largely centred around our class novel, Boy In The Tower by Polly Ho-Yen. Children have read, discussed and analysed the book completing more than 15 reading tasks based upon the novel to date. Character descriptions and a newspaper report have also been written, inspired by the book. All children in the class have also completed their own original fictional story for our annual story compilation which we have just published.

Maths
Children have made a great start to the maths curriculum during this first term. P5 children noted quickly the step up in difficulty with Key Stage 2 work- particularly evident with aspects of number. We've engaged in lots of practical activities to help us develop our problem solving capacity and to improve our measuring skills. Our adoption of bar modelling as a problem solving technique has really helped many of our learners to visualize problems and approach them in a structured way.

ICT
Children have made a great start to their module on video editing. Using video clips of their own P.E lessons, children have used Windows Live Movie Maker to edit their videos, marking transitions, adding text, music. The finished products are very pleasing indeed.
